Tobacco-Alcohol Recovery

Tobacco addiction recovery is a temporary journey of re-adjustment: a period when deeply ingrained psychological nicotine feeding cues caused by the chemical dependency are broken.

It can take up to 72 hours for the blood-serum to become nicotine-free and 90% of nicotine's metabolites to exit the body. During this period the anxieties associated with readjustment normally peak in intensity and begin to gradually decline. Irritability, often anxiety's aftermath, seems to peak at about 48 hours while restlessness peaks at 72 hours.

Activities such as deep breathing with mind relaxation, together with a bit of physical activity, can help diminish anxieties. Adjustment of caffeine intake and limiting sugars can also have a calming effect. Acidic fruit juices, like cranberry, may help accelerate extraction of the blood's remaining nicotine and decease the maximum of 72 hours required for the body to completely metabolize all nicotine.

Alcohol rehab programs educate the alcohol user to the facts about chemical dependency and the changes needed to live a alcohol-free lifestyle. A variety of therapy can be included in a given alcohol rehab setting Most alcohol rehabs provide counseling, behavioral therapy, lectures, group therapy, discussion groups and other types of services to persons with alcohol use disorders. Many various behavioral alcohol rehab programs have been shown to help alcohol rehab patients achieve and maintain prolonged abstinence. Patients in alcohol rehab are urged to avoid situations that lead to alcohol abuse and to practice alcohol refusal skills. Outcome studies indicate that an individual’s success will be determined primarily by their willingness to incorporate new concepts and ideas into their lives and change their reactions to life, patterns of behavior and thinking habits.

Community based program such as Alcoholics Anonymous can provide on-going support to addicts improving the probability of long-term sobriety. http://www.aa.org/?Media=PlayFlash
