A New Way to Look at Lice?
An article in the New York Times reported that lice are not as big of a threat as they are often interpreted as. The article provides alternative ways of viewing lice based on scientific studies and scientific fact, and encourages school professionals and parents to abandon policies that keep children from school because of lice. "Yet aside from the ick factor and a sometimes itchy scalp caused by an allergic reaction to their saliva, head lice cause no physical distress and transmit no diseases. In a clinical report issued in July by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the organization noted that head lice cause “a high level of anxiety among parents of school-aged children.”
